Marketing Books

For today’s assignment, I looked at the video How to Market a Book by Penguin Random House. It is short and happy and gives a very brief overview of what working in the publishing and marketing industry might look like. This video is short and definitely focuses on the benefits and positives of being involved in the marketing and publishing industry. It's interesting to watch them go through many different cover options, and at the end, they all celebrate how the cover will change. It also makes it seem like almost all of the marketing books is digital now. The speaker says they spend a lot of time on Twitter, Instagram, and other websites to grow awareness, support, and excitement over the book.

But, the speaker says, there are other ways too. For an example, it shows them hosting a book release of The Handmaid's Tale with Margret Attwood, and having ladies come dressed up as the handmaid. She says they used digital means to spread that event to thousands more people. This is a good example of being creative and making people excited to buy the book.

The video makes this life sound exciting and upbeat, and like you can really make a difference in this industry- which may be a bit deceiving. But for a short video on Youtube, there's not much else to say. It doesn’t have much to say about this process from the writer’s perspective, which could also be deceiving since it makes it look like the writer doesn’t really have to be involved (which we know not to be true).
